SUMMARY:Exhibition Foyer: Sam Derounian
DESCRIPTION:Animal\, Vegetable\, Mineral.\n4 Aug. – 3 Sept. 2023\nMon – Fri\, 9am – 4pm \nSam Derounian shows screen-prints combining natural and industrial imagery entangled with the human figure\, and set within hand-painted environments. \nThe exhibition\, Animal\, Vegetable\, Mineral\, deals with themes of humans’ relationship with technology and its effects on wellbeing and self-perception\, taking its name from a lecture by the British educational Philosopher\, Ken Robinson. Robinson compared educational models of the contemporary western world to those of industry\, opining that they should more ideally resemble those of horticulture\, if students were to thrive and develop. \nDerounian applies Robinson’s ideas about development and wellbeing in the context of this body of work for the exhibition; His allegorical images explore the atomizing and isolating effects of the ubiquity of technology and the negation of nature on the individual – psychologically\, socially\, politically\, and philosophically – in the series. \nDuring his residency in the print room at the Danish Art Workshops\, Derounian has been making colour prints with multiple layers\, based on existing sketches created in PhotoShop. \nThe biggest challenge has been to translate photographic imagery into bitmaped images. The second challenge has been mixing colours\, that match those found in the original sketches\, and mixing these with physical inks. The prints are small\, detailed\, and multi-coloured\, so small mistakes in both of these respects have big consequences for the finished works. \nExhibition Opening 4th of August 2023 at 3pm – 5pm in Strandgade 27B\, Christianshavn. \nSam Derounian (UK/DK) holds an MA from the Slade School of Fine Art (2017) and a BA (Hons) from the Glasgow School of Art (2011). Recent and upcoming exhibitions include: Danske Grafikeres Hus (Copenhagen)\, Bonamatic (Copenhagen)\, Casa Capitao (Lisbon)\, Winzavod CCA (Moscow)\, Vermilion Sands (Copenhagen)\, and Tate Modern (London).

SUMMARY:Udstilling Foyer: Maria Koshenkova
DESCRIPTION:The Caretakers\n8. september – 1. oktober 2023 \nMaria Koshenkovas glasskulpturer tager udgangspunkt i mødet mellem materialitet og følelser. \nEr i øvrigt repræsenteret af: \nMUDAC Museum of Contemporary Design and Applied Arts\, Switzerland\nToyama Glass Art Museum\, Japan\nGlasmuseet Ebeltoft\, Dk\nHempel Glass Museum\,Dk\nShanghai Art Collection Museum\, Kina\nThe Ludwig Museum\, St.Petersburg\, Rusland\nMuseum of American Glass\, NJ\, USA\n“New Collection”\, The Perm Foundation\, Perm\, Rusland \n– \nEnglish \nThe Caretakers\n8 Sept. – 1 Oct. 2023 \nMaria Koshenkova’s glass sculptures are based on the meeting between materiality and emotions. Her artistic foundation is a fundamental fascination with the special ability of glass to move in the ambivalent\, mysterious and unpredictable\, between the hot and the cold\, the living and the dead. \nAlthough she increasingly uses new materials\, glass is still the heart and the essential element. \n“When I work with glass\, I am able to shape very directly\, quickly and intensively and at the same time use the entire color spectrum. That way I get very close to the experience of painting in sculptural form”. \nThe exhibition constitutes a dialogue between different materials: glass\, metal and colored rope. Metal parts and rope act as supporting elements for the glass sculptures\, they form a supporting function – hence the name\, The Caretakers. The glass represents the human part\, which is vulnerable and exposed\, whereas the metal and the rope form an auxiliary function – a kind of caring role. The very process of making the parts fit together into a larger whole\, and giving the static glass mobility is a thematic anchor for the exhibition. \n“My project is about turning dramatic and violent life conditions into a poetic narrative. Like if\, after a car accident\, the human bodies decide to go to a bar and have a drink. Bleeding and broken\, they keep moving… on wheels”. \nAnother important element is the color. The metal structures are colored using a method similar to that used for glass. The colors unite glass\, rope and metal parts and make them merge into the aesthetics of a sci-fi universe. \nExhibition Opening: 8 Sept. 2023\, 3pm – 5pm \nAbout the Artist\nDanish/Russian Maria Koshenkova (b. 1981) lives in Copenhagen and has worked with glass sculptures in Denmark for more than 15 years. She works in the boundary between craft and art and is interested in the encounter between materiality and emotions\, between brutality and tenderness. \nKoshenkova has exhibited in both Denmark and abroad and i.a. contributed works to the Danish pavilion at the 59th Biennale in Venice. \nAlso represented by:\nMUDAC Museum of Contemporary Design and Applied Arts\, Switzerland\nToyama Glass Art Museum\, Japan\nThe Glass Museum Ebeltoft\, Dk\nHempel Glass Museum\, Dk\nShanghai Art Collection Museum\, China\nThe Ludwig Museum\, St. Petersburg\, Russia\nMuseum of American Glass\, NJ\, USA “New Collection”\,\nThe Perm Foundation\, Perm\, Russia
